Creating the Front Cover

I wanted a front cover that represented the way the publication would be presented: clean, clear & concise. I decided the best way to do that would be to communicate an important aspect of the sport first and foremost: the oval-shaped ball. I used this image as a base and created a simple icon that could be used to represent the booklet:

I used the visual identity made through the simplicity of the front cover, I started to apply the comparisons to the layout. The blue seems to work better as the title, it gives a better hierarchy to the layout.

Hate Initial Development

For hate, it had to be bold rugged and intimidating. I chose a range of typefaces that represented this and did a few experiments with it. I preferred the Haymaker typeface to highlight the main words, as I felt it had a wild-west quality to it - something you would see in wanted posters.
Here the development:

Here is the switch of composition, I felt that "Throughout the day... is... thinking about" read so much better than 'Throughout... the day is... thinking about' and it also helped to break the quote up nicely. I also tried adding the 3D effect on 'ENERGY', but I thought it took emphasis away from 'destroying', which I think is the most hateful word by far:

Love Poster Screenprints

A collection of all the prints I made from the Love quote, including two non-process colours on a range of stocks and colours - featuring a selection of 4 of my best.

Comparing Rugby League & Union

Rugby Union is the bigger of the two sports. By making a direct comparison, readers may be able to grasp a better understanding of Rugby Leage straight away, based on their understanding of Rugby Union.

One of the variables was infinite, so by using the keyboard viewer shown in Mike's session yesterday, I was able to identify the combination for the infinity symbol as alt + 5.

Trying to compare the two with colour, but realised the blue and red resembled the American elections. Also, the rugby league looked to stand out a little more, and the emphasis is on league, so I toned the Union comparison down. I didn't like the layout of this comparison though, it's not as structured as the table and harder to understand.

Experimenting with subtle ways of leading the eye and organising data, altering the Unions colour from a dull grey to a light brown.

Tried white, didn't really stand out on the background.

Experimenting with number typefaces.

Organising the final thing so everything is aligned perfectly, ready to be transferred into the editorial.
